Why does air move inside when the outdoor unit will not start?
The indoor fan and outdoor cooling equipment do different jobs. Fan-only operation is one possibility. An outdoor power, control or part fault is another. Sound and airflow can describe the condition but cannot identify the failed part.
Keep hands out of the outdoor unit
Do not push a fan blade, open a disconnect or remove a service panel. If the unit hums, smells hot or again and again attempts to start, stop cooling at a safe thermostat and seek a check. A moving blade is not a safe test target.
Leave a breaker that has tripped in its present position. The cause needs checking before the circuit is put back into service.
Separate the two notes
At the thermostat, note the operating mode, fan setting and whether the room is above the target temperature. A fan set to run continuously may move air without a current call for cooling. That differs from an active cooling request when the outdoor unit does not respond.
From a safe distance, report whether the outdoor unit is silent, buzzing or visibly running. Do not infer whether the compressor runs from the fan alone. Include whether this condition is constant or intermittent.
Locate both pieces of equipment
Golden Gate City and Golden Gate Estates are shown as different areas in the County’s planning map. Give the street address and any apartment number, not only the broader Golden Gate label.
If several outdoor units sit together, do not assume the closest unit belongs to your home. Ask the owner or manager to identify it. Access to the indoor thermostat without access to the matching unit may limit the check.
Let measurements decide the part
A capacitor, contactor, motor or control problem cannot be selected reliably from a silent outdoor unit alone. Request the tested finding and the proposed repair. Do not order a part solely because the symptom resembles an online example.
State whether the equipment is a central split system, ductless unit or something else, if known. Acceptance of the equipment and access conditions should be confirmed before a visit is arranged.
Questions about this repair
Does the indoor fan prove the whole system has power?
No. It confirms only the observed indoor operation. The outdoor equipment and its controls may have a separate fault.
Can I spin the fan with a stick?
No. Do not put anything through the grille or try to start a motor manually.
